Calm Classroom Management Strategies That Work
Good classroom management mostly looks like nothing is happening. Students know the expectations, they feel the system is fair, and small problems get handled before they grow.
Teach expectations, don't just post them
Model what "working quietly" actually looks and sounds like, have students practise it, and then show the noise level you expect on screen so nobody has to guess.
Make participation fair
When the same five hands go up, the rest of the class checks out. Calling on students at random keeps everyone thinking and removes any sense of favourites.
Reward teams, not just individuals
Team points let positive peer pressure do some of the work. Keep the scoreboard visible, award points for effort and kindness, and reset it regularly so no team falls hopelessly behind.
Use the least intervention first
Move from quiet to loud, never the other way around.
- A look or moving closer
- A quiet, private reminder
- A short, calm consequence
- A conversation after class
Try it in your classroom
