First-Week Classroom Routines That Save Your Year
4 min read
The first week isn't about curriculum. It's about teaching the routines that let curriculum happen for the next 180 days. Here are six worth investing in.
The entrance routine
A projected countdown timer runs the moment students walk in. Bags down, do-now started, materials out before it hits zero. Practice it three times on day one.
The volume routine
Introduce a noise meter and the volume levels (silent, whisper, partner, group). Practice each level for 30 seconds. Refer to the levels by name all year.
The grouping routine
Teach students that random groupings are the norm, not the exception. Do a random shuffle on day two — for something low-stakes like a name-game — so the pattern is set.
The calling-on routine
Introduce the name wheel. Tell students the wheel decides, and that means they always need a thought ready. Model it with a fun question first.
The transition routine
Every subject switch gets a timer. Materials away, new materials out, ready to go — under two minutes. Celebrate personal bests.
The celebration routine
Put a scoreboard up for the class as a whole. Earn points for beating the transition timer, hitting volume goals, and small kindnesses. Cash out on Fridays.
Every routine here maps to a free tool on My Classroom Help. Bookmark them all in one folder before day one.
